With strength from Kifissia

In Athens nowadays. A scene filled with suitcases. Three women getting ready to leave for Thailand and a daughter who can’t wait to have a home of her own. But the journey toward freedom—toward the strength to start a new life—keeps getting postponed. The suitcases are packed, but the journey seems to grow ever more distant. Ultimately, as the setting falls apart, it becomes clear that they, too, are reluctant to leave behind the lives that are nothing more than the men who defined them.

Emmanouela Kontogiorgou brings her own feminine, directorial perspective to a play in which the comic emerges from the tragic. Three women struggle to break free from the bonds of the men who define them. Just like all women. Then and now. Regardless of age or financial status. It doesn’t matter what their exact age is, whether they live in a wealthy home, or whether they smoke—what matters are these women themselves and the fervor with which they “shout” throughout the play: “I want to be free! I want to be free!”

Trapped in their fate as women, facing a tragic impasse that borders on the absurd, Maro, Fotini, and Aleka seek the happiness that will fulfill them on a journey. Someday. In Thailand. If only.

Following a successful run of performances in Thessaloniki and Ioannina, the “Spiti tis” Theater Company presents, for a limited number of performances in Athens, the play by Dimitris Kechidis and Eleni Chavaria “With Strength from Kifissia,” directed by Emmanouela Kontogiorgou.

Starting May 8, every Wednesday and Thursday at 9:15 p.m. at the Fournos Theater, a new group of actors offers a fresh take—free from any clichés—on a play from modern Greek drama, which, although written in 1994, is already considered a classic.
